Meet real people who benefit from massage therapy

TORONTO, ON. To celebrate Massage Therapy Awareness Week on October 21 – 27, 2018, the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario (RMTAO) will be sharing the stories of people from across Canada who have received massage therapy treatments that helped them get back to doing what they love.

Massage therapy can be beneficial for people of all ages for a wide range of conditions. This Massage Therapy Awareness Week we will be promoting the varied ways that real people have benefited from massage therapy treatments and outlining how massage therapy can help.

The patients we will be highlighting have used massage therapy to help them recover from an injury or illness, as an additional therapy to help them deal with a chronic illness or mental health issue, and to remain active, mobile and pain-free for improved quality of life.

Research shows that massage therapy is a great option for chronic pain and is one of the non-drug therapies recommended as an alternative to opioids. Massage therapy can decrease the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety, lessen the unpleasant symptoms of cancer treatments, help manage post-surgical pain, and can help improve overall well-being.

Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are regulated health professionals and they are an important part of your health care team. All Ontarians can visit an RMT of their choice without prescription or referral. At your first treatment, an RMT will assess your condition and develop a treatment plan to address your individual needs and concerns. They will explain the areas they will be treating, the outcomes they expect to see, any possible side effects and their recommendations for future care. Open communication with your RMT will ensure you get the treatments that work best for you.

“RMTs are remarkable health professionals that help people from all walks of life with a vast array of health needs,” said Andrew Lewarne, the Executive Director & CEO of the RMTAO. “We hear stories every day of the great work that massage therapists are able to do to improve their patients’ lives. From easing pain, gaining movement, or reducing stress, the benefits of massage therapy are countless and tremendous.”

This Massage Therapy Awareness Week we will be posting the stories of people who have been helped by massage therapy to our social media channels, and inviting people to share how #massagehelps them. Check us out on Facebook and Twitter @RMTAO, and share our posts with your network to get the word out about how massage therapy has helped people and the role massage therapists play in healthcare.
